Environmental Health and Safety
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is part of Real Estate and Capital Operations (REDCO).
The main goal of the EHS Department is to protect the health and safety of NJIT faculty, students, staff, and visitors, by implementing comprehensive environmental health and safety services and programs. Another important goal of the EHS Department is to enhance environmental stewardship throughout the NJIT campus and to protect NJIT resources and property.
Currently, the NJIT EHS Department is staffed by four full-time EHS professionals.
Mitchell Gayer, EHS Director
Mitchell joined the NJIT EHS Department in March 2016. He brings over twenty-five years of EHS and higher education experience to NJIT including having served as the former Deputy Director of the Rutgers Global Tuberculosis Institute (GTBI) at New Jersey Medical School. Prior to working at GTBI, Mitchell held various administrative and research management positions at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (EOHSI) an academic research institute located on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University. Mitchell has also served as Occupational Hygienist, Biological Safety Officer, and Laboratory Safety Manager for the Rutgers Environmental Health and Safety Department (REHS) and held various health and safety positions at several institutions in NYC including the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the NYC Department of Health. Mitchell earned an MPH degree in Environmental Science at the Columbia University School of Public Health, an MS degree in Occupational Health at CUNY’s Hunter College School of Health Science and an undergraduate degree in Agriculture from the University of Georgia. Payam Ghanbari, EHS Engineer/Manager
Payam has worked for the EHS Department in a variety of capacities including Student Manager since May 2014 and Safety Manager from June 2015 to August 2016. Payam was hired as a full-time EHS Coordinator in August 2016. Payam has significant experience in coordinating the NJIT Right-to-Know and Hazard Communication programs. Additionally, Payam coordinates various other EHS programs including regulated waste management, controlled substances, laboratory inspections, fire safety, and radiation safety program. Payam earned an MS degree in Industrial Engineering from NJIT and a BS degree in Industrial Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology. Noelle Screen-Reddick, EHS Manager
Noelle joined the NJIT EHS Department as a full-time EHS Coordinator in October 2016. Noelle graduated from NJIT with a BS degree in Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, Noelle joined the Covanta Energy Corporation as an Environmental Engineer. Following Covanta, Noelle worked for the Alcoa Cooperation as a Senior EHS Engineer. Noelle’s experience in the industry will assist the NJIT EHS Department as she assumes responsibilities for various EHS programs including air emissions and environmental monitoring. Noelle also coordinates other EHS programs including LASER safety, bloodborne pathogens, laboratory inspections, and asbestos operations and maintenance. Richard E. Arlaus, EHS Coordinator, Biosafety Officer
Richard E. Arlaus joined the NJIT EHS department as a full-time EHS Coordinator on October 18, 2021. Richard graduated from NJIT with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and was a member of the Honors College. Richard has approximately 12 years of industry experience in both chemical engineering and EHS engineering capacities. Additionally, Richard has approximately 12 years of municipal experience as an environmental health specialist and HAZMAT technician for the County of Bergen. Richard’s industrial experience in microelectronics will assist EHS in the oversight of the recently refurbished microfabrication facility.
